Sculpt:
Tion Medon is another new REVENGE OF THE SITH character who has been heavily hyped, this time because he's being played by quirky Down Under character actor Bruce Spence, perhaps best known as the gyrocoptor pilot in THE ROAD WARRIOR. He's also had featured roles in THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS (Trainman), PETER PAN (Cookson), and THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (The Mouth of Sauron, DVD extended version). Medon is Prime Minister of the planet of Utapau, and the character has a bizarre, almost gothic look to him, with influences from both the German silent classic NOSFERATU and the Pinhead character from the HELLRAISER films. It's another indication that Lucas really is going a lot darker with ROTS than any previous installments of the series. The sculpt is very clean, with lots of detailing in both the face and the costume, as well as the accessories: 9 out of 10.
Paint:
Medon's head and hands are molded in a white-colored plastic, with a gray wash applied to them. There's a purplish paint app around his eyes, while the eyes themselves have very large, black pupils. His mouth has yellowish teeth, and the hands have yellow, clawed nails. The costume is an ornate robe, molded in a maroon, with a darker maroon wash and silver accents. There is a dark brown sash at his waist, with two other dark brown accents on his chest. His ornate cane (or possibly it's a sword?) is molded in silver, with a blue paint app to the large jewel at the handle. His long blaster rifle is also molded in silver, with gunmetal gray accents. It's a fairly intricate paint scheme that has been pulled off nicely: 9/10.
Articulation:
Medon has ball-joints at the neck and both shoulders, with standard planer-cut joints at the waist and wrists and angled planer-cuts at both elbows. I'm assuming that the legs have cuts at the hips, but the outer robe is so tight to them that it renders them useless. The right hand can hold the cane like a sword, or it can cup the ball at the end of the handle -- but to pose it this way, the cane must be touching a surface, as the cane handle doesn't lock into place when held this way. The left hand holds the rifle, with the index finger fitting into the trigger guard. Unfortunately, the figure cannot hold the rifle with both hands: 8/10.
Accessories:
Medon has his cane and a long Utapauan blaster rifle. Although the "Sneak Preview" wave was supposed to come with the standard gunmetal gray interlocking base/figure stands in use since the Saga '04 line, they aren't included: 8.5/10.
Packaging:
The same brand new REVENGE OF THE SITH card that will be used with the rest of the movie line. The card is almost triangular in shape, and is diecut on the sides and top. The figure insert image is now separate from the ROTS logo/figure name insert. The background is a field of molten lava behind the figure, with a stylized Darth Vader mask looming at the top, forming the J-hook. Noticably absent from the "Sneak Preview" cards are the silhouettes of Anakin and Obi-Wan dueling: the dueling figures do appear on the regular movie tie-in cards, however. On the inside of the outer clear blister are "Sneak Preview" stickers. The character insert is a heavily photoshopped image of Medon; the same image is used on the cardback. The character name insert declares him as "Preview: 2 of 4." The "Sneak Preview" cardbacks have images of the four figures in this wave, as well as the "Sneak Preview" Anakin's Jedi Starfighter. 8/10.
Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has just appeared at retail, and is packed equally per 12-figure case, but only 2 in the Wal-Mart 20-figure endcap display cases: 8.5/10.
Conclusion:
Tion Medon might not have a large role in the film, but fans adore quirky actor Bruce Spence and this character makes good use of his lean, gaunt features. The lack of the figure stand is disappointing, but the figure stands up quite well without it. The character's name has yet to appear on any other ROTS figure lists I've seen yet, so this might be your only chance to get him: 8.5/10.
