Sculpt:
Twi'lek Jedi Master Aayla Secura crash-lands along with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano on the planet Maridun in STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. Secura and Tano must convince the peaceful Lurmen that inhabit the world to help heal an injured Skywalker, even though the Lurmen are opposed to the war. The all-new sculpt is based on the computer-generated animation design for the character. The sculpt adequately captures the new look, which mixes elements of Japanese anime with Gerry Anderson-style marionettes. While basically accurate to the animation, there are some problems with her arms as a result of added articulation: 7.5 out of 10.
Paint:
Aayla's head, upper and lower torsos, and arms are molded in the light blue color of her skin. Her head has brown paint apps to her eyebrows and head-wrap, which continue down her lekku. Her lekku also have yellow decos, representing her gold-colored tattoos. Her lips are purple. Her eyes are white, with red irises and black pupils and eyelashes. Her torso has a brown paint app to her layered halter top, with the same color applied to her sleeved left arm. Her belt and tabbard are molded in medium tan, with brown decos to the front and rear tabbards. Her legs and feet are molded in purplish-brown, with tan apps to her boots. Her lightsaber is molded in translucent blue, with silver paint apps. Her breath mask/shoulder armor is molded in off-white, with a mustard-yellow paint app. Her goggles are molded in clear plastic, with white apps to the straps. Her jetpack is molded in white, with mustard-yellow and black paint apps. My sample has a pretty sloppy paint job on the face and head, with some brown streaks on her back and unpainted streaks on her upper torso: 7.5/10.
Articulation:
Aayla has ball-jointed head, shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles, with planer-cut wrist, hips, and chest. The knee, elbow, and shoulder joints out of proportion to the rest of the body: 7/10.
Accessories:
Aayla comes with her lightsaber, goggles, breath mask, and jetpack: 8/10.
Packaging:
The new CLONE WARS card uses an angular diecut pattern similar to the Thirtieth Anniversary Collection packaging, with the STAR WARS logo and "The Clone Wars" printed just beneath it, both in red. A stylized image of each character is in the upper right hand corner of the card. The figure's name and collection number is printed on the blister insert (Aayla Secura is CW40), with the STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS logo in yellow. Each figure's special feature is printed in white (Aayla "Includes Flight Gear!"). The cardback features an image of the character from the episode it appears in, and features text that explains the character's role in the episode: 8.5/10.
Availability:
Aayla Secura has been appearing at retail for two months now. She sold out quickly at first, and remains somewhat hard to find; the figure is also available at various online shops: 8/10.
Conclusion:
Aayla Secura is very popular with collectors, but her flawed facial paint and oversized joints turn her into "Aayla Sofugly": 7.8/10.
Review Date: 3/5/10
