Sculpt:
Rebel pilot and fledgling Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker leads a team of Snowspeeders against Imperial AT-AT walkers in THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Skywalker and the other pilots keep the Walkers at bay with the Rebel Base on the icy planet Hoth is evacuated. While it boasts one of the best head-sculpts as far as facial likenesses to actor Mark Hamill, the body sculpt has flaws that effect the figure's accessories. It rates a 7.5 out of 10.
Paint:
Luke's head is molded in the pale gray of his soft helmet. His face has a pale flesh paint app, with medium blond paint apps to his hair and eyebrows. His eyes have with, light blue, and black paint apps. His torso, arms, pelvis, lower flight-jacket, and upper legs are molded in bright orange. There are off-white, black, and silver decos to the flight harness on his torso. The environmental control box on the chest is molded in medium gray, and has dark gray, white, dark blue, and silver paint decos. The lower jacket has black and silver paint apps to the belt. Luke's gloves are molded in medium gray, with light grap apps to the hands. The left glove has silver and black decos to a small piece on the gauntlet. His leg straps are molded in off-white. His lower legs and feet are molded in the medium gray of his boots, with bright orange paint apps just above the boot tops. There are light gray decos to the straps on both boots. The left boot has black and silver apps to the extra ammo strap at the top of the boot. Luke's spear-gun is molded in metallic blue, white the spearhead is molded in pearl white. The lightsaber hilt is silver, with black decos. His helmet is molded in translucent amber, and painted primarily white with black, red, and orange accents: 9/10.
Articulation:
Luke's head, shoulders, chest, elbows, knees, and ankles are all ball-jointed. His wrists and hips have standard, planer-cut joints: 8.5/10.
Accessories:
Luke comes with lightsaber hilt, removable helmet, harpoon gun with line, and the head and blaster of buildable figure HK-50. Once again, the wrong lightsaber hilt (Darth Vader's from the VOTC Vader) is included with a Luke figure. The removable helmet fits quite snugly to the head, and can be difficult to remove without pulling the head off the body, too. Also, the head of the harpoon gun isn't film accurate. It was more of a suction/magnetic head than a grappling head. The harpoon gun's line was originally meant to peg onto Luke's belt, but this detail got lost somewhere along the production line. It now seems to be meant to attach to the hose that runs from Luke's chest panel into his left pants pocket. There is also nowhere to peg the lightsaber hilt to Luke's belt: 7/10.
Packaging:
The new Legacy Collection card uses an angular diecut pattern similar to the Thirtieth Anniversary Collection packaging, with the STAR WARS logo in red and "Legacy Collection" printed in black just beneath it. A stylized image of each character is in the upper right hand corner of the card. The figure's name and collection number is printed on the blister insert (Luke Skywalker is BD51). The cardback features a photo of the character from the film it appears in (Luke is seen in a shot from TESB), and features text that explains the character's role in the film: 8.5/10.
Availability:
As of this writing, the figure has been appearing at retail for four months. While initially scarce at retail, it's now readily available in stores and from various online sources: 8.5/10.
Conclusion:
Snowspeeder Luke is one that collectors have long been clamoring for, and the announcement that a new one was coming at last was met with celebration. Initial photos of the prototype seemed to give fans just about all they wanted from this figure (with the exceptions of the right lightsaber hilt and a removable blade for the saber). Unfortunately, it didn't live up to its promise: 8.2/10.
